The coronavirus vaccine a person receives depends in part on where they live. The rundown below lists the most widely used COVID-19 vaccines and they are used.
Pfizer- BioNtech — The Pfizer-BioNTech shot is an mRNA vaccine in use in the U.S., across Europe and around the world.
Moderna — Also an mRNA vaccine, the Moderna COVID-19 shot is used in the U.S. and Europe.
Jannsen — Also known as the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, approval of the J&J shot was amended in the U.S. in April to add a warning about a very rare clot disorder. Used in the U.S., Europe and other parts of the world.
Oxford/Astra-Zeneca — The Oxford/Astra Zeneca vaccine is approved for use in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South and Central America.
Coronavac — Developed by the Chinese company Sinovac, Coronavac vaccine is used in China, across Asia, and Central and South America.
Sinopharm — Developed by Beijing Bio-Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd, subsidiary of China National Biotec Group — used in China, across Asia, parts of Africa.
Sputnik V — Developed by the Moscow-based Gamaleya Research Institute. In use in Russia, Eastern Europe and parts of Asia and Africa.
Novavax — Announced data pointing to a 90% effective rate June 14, the company hopes to have the shot available for use in the U.S., Europe and other parts of the globe by the end of September.
