Cape Cod shark warnings: Alerts issued off Chatham, Provincetown

The Cape Cod shark alert app was busy yet again this weekend, the summer new normal as great whites roam the shoreline feasting on seals and other prey.

A shark was spotted by a pilot off North Beach Island in Chatham on Sunday afternoon, triggering a shark alert from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

Earlier in the day, a shark was seen eating a seal a couple hundred yards off Nauset Beach in Orleans.

A shark alert from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy on Saturday placed the predators off Race Point Beach in Provincetown, as lifeguards ordered people out of the water.

“A temporary no-swimming order has been issued by CCNS Lifeguards at Race Point Beach,” the alert stated. “Beach-only activities permitted. This order will expire after one hour from the last sighting.”

Also, there was a shark report in Truro along Cape Cod Bay of a “bite out of a seal.” The person who took a photo of the seal reported that they did not see a shark.

Meanwhile, a Pacific Ocean swimmer was seriously injured in a Saturday morning shark attack at California’s Gray Whale Cove State Beach in San Mateo County, according to police and fire officials.

The 35-year-old man was bitten by a shark around 9:15 a.m. Emergency responders treated him with “advanced life support measures,” and he was taken to a trauma center.

The man was able to swim to shore after being bitten on the right leg, police said. The shark was described as a 6-foot to 8-foot great white shark. The beach, south of Pacifica, has since been closed.

Shark attacks are rare and usually occur when people are mistaken for seals or other ocean mammals. The last death from shark bite in California occurred in May 2020, when Ben Kelly was bitten on the leg while surfing off Sand Dollar Beach in Aptos, near Santa Cruz. Although he was able to paddle to shore, the bite severed an artery behind his knee and he bled to death.

Herald wire services were used in this report.
