As Boston hits 100 degrees for first time in a decade, severe thunderstorms threaten region
Boston smashed its record for the hottest final day of June on Wednesday, hitting 100 degrees for the first time in a decade, according to the National Weather Service.
As Boston reached triple digits, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of Massachusetts through the rest of the day.
“There should be a fair amount of thunderstorm activity,” said Glenn Field, a warning coordination meteorologist who was tracking the storm activity from the National Weather Service’s Boston office in Norton.
“Some could be severe,” he added, noting the potential for damaging winds up to 70 miles per hour and large hail.
The only parts of the Bay State not under the severe thunderstorm watch are the Cape and Islands.
Before the storms roll through, Boston broke the record for the hottest June 30 in recent recorded history. The previous record was 95 degrees in 1945.
The last time Boston hit 100 degrees was July 22, 2011.
Wednesday’s 100 degrees comes after 99 degrees on Tuesday.
The storms Wednesday afternoon and evening will drop temps into the 80s on Thursday before plunging into the 60s on Friday and Saturday.
