The Medford Advisory Committee to Rename the Columbus Elementary School has narrowed down the list of suggested names to 18 possible choices:
- Krystle Campbell, a Medford native who died in the Boston Marathon bombings
- Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court justice
- Crispus Attucks, who escaped from slavery and died in the Boston Massacre
- Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic
- Grace Muriel Earhart Morrissey, Amelia’s sister who lived in Medford and was a teacher and activist
- Belinda Sutton, a slave at Medford’s Royall House
- Lydia Maria Child, an abolitionist who was born in Medford
- Prince Hall, an abolitionist who founded Prince Hall Freemasonry and lived in Medford
- Pauline Alice Young, a civil rights leader who was born in Medford
- Sagamore John, chief of the Pawtucket tribe
- Wampanoag, the Native American tribe
- Missituk, the Mystic River watershed home to the Massachusetts tribe and other Native Americans
- Fannie Farmer, who created “The Fannie Farmer Cookbook” and grew up in Medford
- Pauline Walker, a Medford teacher for more than 50 years
- Raymond S. Murano, who was superintendent of Medford Public Schools
- Jean Barry-Sutherland, who was the first principal of Medford’s Columbus Elementary School
- Achi (Achillius) Sullo, a first-generation Italian who was a WWII veteran and lived in Medford
