Shaw 54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial ceremonial unveiling event on Memorial Day

A ceremonial unveiling event for the Robert Gould Shaw 54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial will on take place Memorial Day after it was postponed due to Sunday’s rain.

The “Witness to History” event will take place on Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boston Common — at the corner of Beacon Street and Park Street, across from the State House.

The public is invited to sign their names in the Partnership to Renew the Shaw 54th Regiment Memorial’s restoration guestbooks and to receive a commemorative pen.

The Partnership this Memorial Day weekend is holding a ceremonial unveiling at the Boston Common for the first time since October 2019 following a $3 million restoration project.

The fencing and protective covering was removed ahead of Memorial Day weekend, giving the public an opportunity to see the restored memorial during a weekend that includes two anniversaries: The anniversary of when Shaw and his men marched down Beacon Street past the State House on May 28, 1863, as portrayed in the Memorial, and when the masterpiece by American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens was unveiled on May 31, 1897.

For people who want to sign the guestbook but can’t make it to the event, they can sign the digital Witness to History book online at www.Shaw54thMemorialRestoration.org.
