Revolution unbeaten at home with 3-1 win over Red Bulls
The Revolution are committed to making Foxboro an inhospitable MLS destination.
With a 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night, the Revs improved to 4-0 at Gillette Stadium, their best start at home since 2005.
“That’s the mentality we have because last year was the opposite way,” said striker Gustavo Bou. “Last year we lost some (home) games and tied some game and we couldn’t get three points at home.
“This season we want play strong here at Gillette stadium and thank God we’ve have won all four games here. Hopefully we can continue that.”
The Revolution (4-1-2, 14 points) remain in first place in the Eastern Conference and visit FC Cincinnati on next Saturday. Center back Andrew Farrell registered a milestone 246th appearance, tying him with Chris Tierney for fourth on the club’s all-time list.
The Red Bulls went up 1-0 off a corner kick in the 7th minute. Midfielder Frankie Amaya launched a rainbow into the middle of the danger area. Center back Andres Reyes found a seam in the scrum and headed the ball to the right half of the goal before Revs’ goalkeeper Matt Turner could react.
The Revs tied the game 1-1 on an ambitious play that developed in the midfield. Arnor Traustason got control at center line and launched a long ball to Bou, who got behind Red Bulls defender Sean Nealis. Bou closed in and fired the ball off his right foot that beat keeper Carlos Coronel in the 36th minute.
“I think we trained on that during the week and he (Traustason) is a player that keeps his head up and can take control of the ball and find space and lead those gaps in space,” said Bou.
The Red Bulls began to self-destruct in the 38th minute when Reyes was given a red card following his second yellow for a hard take down on Carles Gil, reducing New York to 10 men for the reminder of the game.
The Revs grabbed a 2-1 lead just before halftime. Tajon Buchanan converged at a bad angle from the left flank, corkscrewed Nealis and found the gap between Coronel and the goal line for his first of the season.
“I took the guy one-on-one and that’s what I like to do,” said Buchanan. “I took the shot and luckily it went in.”
The Revolution exploited their manpower advantage to put constant pressure on the New York goal. Arena scraped his earlier formation and inserted Adam Buksa as a second striker alongside Bou in the 61st minute.
Buksa put the Revolution up 3-1 on a great feed from Gil in the 83rd minute. Buksa came off the bench late in the second half and scored the lone goal in the Revs 1-0 victory over reigning MLS champion Columbus on May 16.
Gil played the whole game despite going down twice in the second half with noncontact discomfort in his left leg.
“Carles just got tripped a couple of time and I guess he’s used to it,” said Arena. “The third goal was an excellent goal between and three great players but we are just seven games in and there is a lot to play for.”
