Nearly 4.1 million people in Massachusetts either fully vaccinated or received first shot

Almost 4.1 million people in the state are either fully vaccinated or have received their first coronavirus vaccine shot, according to the latest state vax data.

Nearly 3.1 million people in the state are now fully vaccinated, according to the daily vaccine report Thursday.

Gov. Charlie Baker has said the state is on track to hit its goal of 4.1 million fully vaccinated people by early June.

The list of cities and towns at high risk for coronavirus also continues to shrink, declining for the fifth straight week as the “power of vaccines” drives viral rates down across the state.

There are now six communities in the high-risk “red” zone this week, down from 13 last week and 26 the week prior, weekly Department of Public Health reports show.

This week’s red zones include Edgartown, New Bedford, Acushnet, Taunton, Lowell and Lawrence.

Meanwhile, state health officials on Thursday reported nine new virus deaths and 616 new cases.

Virus cases have been significantly lower in the last couple of weeks amid the vax rollout. The state’s count of estimated active cases is now 15,833 cases, down from the estimated active case tally of 36,775 cases a few weeks ago.

The 15,833 cases is the lowest the estimated active case count has been since the state began reporting it on Nov. 2.

Thursday’s nine new virus deaths bring the state’s total confirmed death toll to 17,722. The seven-day average of confirmed deaths is down to six, which is the lowest death rate of the pandemic.

Statewide hospitalizations have also been dropping amid the state’s vaccine rollout. Total hospitalizations on Thursday declined by 43 patients, bringing the total to 385 patients. The last time there were fewer than 400 COVID patients in Massachusetts hospitals was on Oct. 28.

A total of 620 staff and students in Massachusetts schools have tested positive for coronavirus in the past week, a dip of 49 cases from last week’s report.
