Nearly 1,000 acres burn in Clarksburg State Forest in Western Massachusetts
Ten firefighters from the Bureau of Forest Fire Control, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service patrolled the perimeter of the East Mountain fire on Tuesday, putting out hot spots left by a blaze that burned at least 947 acres in Western Massachusetts, authorities said.
The fire started in the Clarksburg State Forest in Williamstown but did not grow overnight Tuesday and by early yesterday evening was 90% percent contained, said Jennifer Mieth, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services.
Firefighters will return to the scene on Wednesday morning and monitor the fire daily until there is heavy rain, Mieth said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, she said.
