Fund co-founder with U2’s Bono latest college admissions parent headed to jail

Bill McGlashan, buddies with U2’s Bono and a former boss at a global private equity firm, is the latest parent sent to jail in the “Varsity Blues” college admissions cheating scandal.

McGlashan, 57, of California, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Nathaniel Gorton to three months in prison, two years of supervised release, a fine of $250,000, and 250 hours of community service, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

He had pleaded guilty in February, the 30th parent to admit guilt at the time.

The scam, which still has some parents preparing for a trial, has netted a who’s who of wealthy and famous moms and dads all looking for an easy path for their kids into prestigious colleges. Coaches from Yale, Stanford, University of Southern California, Wake Forest, and Georgetown, among others, are also implicated.

In all, 57 defendants are listed in the U.S. Attorney’s database.

That ledger includes Hollowood stars Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin — who both served time in jail and are now out. Loughlin’s husband, the fashion mogul Mossimo Giannulli, is also now out of jail.

Huffman’s husband, fellow actor William H. Macy, was never charged.

In 2017, McGlashan, the former managing partner of TPG Growth and co-founder with Bono of The Rise Fund, agreed to pay co-conspirator William “Rick” Singer to bribe a test administrator, to allow a test “proctor,” to secretly correct McGlashan’s son’s ACT exam answers to obtain a fraudulently inflated score.

Prosecutors said McGlashan’s son received a fraudulent ACT score of 34 and the dad made a purported donation of $50,000 from his personal charitable donation fund to Singer’s sham charity.

One parent, Robert Zangrillo of Florida, was pardoned by former President Donald Trump in January.
