Apponequet rolls over Old Rochester
LAKEVILLE — When Old Rochester and Apponequet opened Saturday night’s game with touchdowns on their first possessions, maybe some thought a shootout was in order.
But as it turned out, only Apponequet brought the adequate artillery to put a significant number on the scoreboard.
Equally efficient running and passing, Apponequet hit Old Rochester with big play after big play to roll to a 42-7 victory in the South Coast Conference Blue Division title game.
“These kids have come to play all year,” Apponequet (6-1) coach Zane Fyfe said. “It’s all matchups. We tried to take advantage of what we could. These guys, they play their butts off. Credit to them. They did exactly what we asked them to do and that’s that.”
Quarterback John Mahan was on target all night for the Lakers. He completed 7 of 11 passes for 190 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Kevin Hughes was the leading rusher with 189 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
That said, it was Old Rochester who struck first. The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and scored on a 27-yard pass from Ryon Thomas to Dylon Thomas to grab a quick 7-0 lead.
“They came out guns blazin’,” Fyfe said. “They put a really good drive together. We made a small adjustment. We were able to slow that down. We forced them to get into some other stuff which worked better toward our matchups.”
From there, though, it was all Apponequet. Mahan helped tie it then give the Lakers the lead when he threw for touchdowns of 13 and 11 yards to Michael Henricksen.
Following an 8-yard touchdown run from Cole Dixon, the Lakers extended their lead to 21-7 in the second quarter.
Then came the chunk plays that turned it into a rout. Mahan hit Chace Gorman over the middle, and Gorman lost his man and outraced the Old Rochester (3-3) secondary for a 79-yard touchdown. Apponequet forced a three and out, and Hughes took a handoff 82 yards for the touchdown as the Lakers went into halftime with a commanding 35-7 lead.
“This team is something special,” Hughes said. “Thank God we had a season. It (stinks) we can’t go any further, (but this) feels amazing.”
Apponequet finished the scoring in the third quarter when Mahan hit Tyler Desrosiers for a 2-yard touchdown.
