Tom Brady rookie card sells for record-breaking $2.25M

Somebody just plunked down a lot of green for the GOAT.

A Tom Brady rookie card just went for a whopping $2.25 million at auction through online sports auction house Lelands — breaking the record set by another one of Brady’s rookie cards that sold for $1.32 million on PWCC Marketplace a few weeks ago.

“We weren’t surprised,” Lelands Director of Acquisitions Jordan Gilroy told the Herald. “There’s always been incredible buzz around Brady and it grew that much more after his most recent Super Bowl win.”

Brady fanatics have been shelling out big bucks for his rookie cards after the former New England Patriots quarterback notched his historic seventh Super Bowl win in February that doubled as his first championship trophy as the signal-caller for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“$2,252,854 is now the most ever paid for a football card. Four decades of sports auctions and yet another world-record price in a Lelands Classic Auction,” the company tweeted Saturday afternoon.

The “2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Rookie Ticket #144 Tom Brady Rookie Autograph card” that fetched $2.25 million through Lelands’ was billed as the “ultimate rookie card” on the site.

It was “purchased on eBay over a decade ago and has been tucked away in a private collection since then,” the auctioneers wrote.

The card, numbered 99, is “one of only 100 made,” Gilroy said, adding that this type of card “has always been Brady’s most expensive and sought-after card.”

The buyer of the pricey piece of Brady’s lore has asked to remain anonymous.

But Brady enthusiasts know who reportedly purchased the one that recently sold for $1.32 million — FitBit CEO James Park.

Park’s card was graded with an 8, with the autograph graded as a 10. The card that just sold was graded as an 8.5, with a 9 for the autograph, though Lelands wrote “the autograph compares favorably with any other graded 10 on the market.”
