Plymouth July 4 parade, fireworks again canceled due to COVID-19

COVID-19 is snuffing out at least one city’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration for a second year.

Organizers behind Plymouth’s Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks called off their 2021 celebrations in an announcement Friday.

“Due to the current state and local guidelines along with keeping the safety of our community, visitors, parade participants and volunteers as a priority, the July Four Plymouth Committee has determined that we will need to cancel the 2021 Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks this year due to ongoing public health concerns and state safety protocols regarding COVID-19,” organizers wrote in a statement.

While the group was “hoping that we could all come together in July 2021 to celebrate our nation’s independence on the waterfront of America’s Hometown,” they’re now “looking forward to welcoming everyone back” in 2022.

Pandemic restrictions put the kibosh on fireworks celebrations across Massachusetts last year, including the Boston Pops’ signature show on the Esplanade. The Boston Symphony Orchestra instead celebrated virtually.

The orchestra is still “evaluating and planning” this year’s Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, according to its website, with an official announcement due in “late spring.”

“The safety and well-being of everyone involved will always remain the highest priority in our decision-making process,” BSO said.
