Eduardo Rodriguez likely to return to Red Sox rotation this week

After missing his Opening Day start due to a case of dead arm, Eduardo Rodriguez is on his way back to the Red Sox rotation.

Manager Alex Cora said Monday night that Rodriguez threw a successful bullpen session at Fenway Park before the Sox’ 11-2 win over the Rays and is likely to make his season debut sometime this week.

“He’s going to be with us sooner rather than later,” Cora said. “We’ll talk a little more tomorrow, but there’s a good chance he’ll be with us during the week.”

Martin Perez will make his season debut Tuesday followed by Nathan Eovaldi on Wednesday, though Thursday’s starter is up in the air.

Tanner Houck would be in line to make his second start, but he was filling in for Rodriguez and the Sox have pointed to slotting Rodriguez back in for Houck, despite Houck’s eight-strikeout gem on Saturday and 1.23 ERA since entering the league last fall.

Rodriguez hasn’t pitched since 2019 after missing the entire 2020 season due to myocarditis related to COVID-19.
