Bedford rallies to edge Boston Latin in five sets

It took a total team effort, but Bedford came away with a thrilling five-set victory Tuesday night over Boston Latin.

The Buccaneers rolled in the fourth and fifth sets to overcome a 2-1 set deficit and ended up with a 3-2 win over Dual County League rival Boston Latin on the road.

“That’s something we have been able to do a few times this year,” said coach Lisa Predaina. “Being able to either come back into a set or be able to come back and win a set.”

It was senior Isabelle Suggs who had a couple huge kills in the fifth to build an 8-4 lead before an unforced error for Boston Latin (5-2) put the match away, 15-10, for Bedford (6-3).

“(Suggs) has a big swing,” Predaina said. “They did a great job at the net and being able to finish those hits was crucial.”

Sophomore Gabriela Zovko was a jack-of-all-trades with 12 kills, three blocks and five aces, with three of the aces coming in the second set that Bedford took a 27-25 victory in. She also notched a couple huge kills to aid the fourth-set win, 25-17.

“(Zovko) is such a versatile player,” said Predaina. “She is still learning to use all of her skill sets, but she is very talented.”

It was the Wolfpack’s service game that gave Bedford trouble most of the match, but especially in the first and third sets. In the first, Boston Latin built a 7-0 lead out of the gate, but held on to win 25-23 after Bedford nearly rallied to take it. In the third, the Wolfpack led 21-4, before a 12-1 run made it a respectable 22-16 deficit. Boston Latin won the third set 25-16.

“We have been working on the service game in practice,” Predaina said. “All the girls have been working on service returns and that helped out (in this match).”

The two teams will face off again at Bedford on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
