The man made the announcement to his dog.
“Hey, is that the new mayor?” Southie resident Chuck Finley yelled at Lana the pooch.
So it was. Acting Mayor Kim Janey made her first public appearances outside of City Hall on Thursday when she made a swing through South Boston, speaking at the Medal of Honor ceremony before hitting up several local businesses along East Broadway as she promised to do all she can to support them as the city begins to recover from the pandemic.
“The city will continue to think outside of the box in terms of thinking creatively around supporting small businesses,” Janey said. She said that means ensuring the promised patio space is available throughout the year, “and making sure that we’re extending that season and lending support.”
Janey, the city’s first Black and first female chief executive, toured around Southie on her second full day as acting mayor after the the Monday-night departure of now-Labor Secretary Martin Walsh elevated the 55-year-old city council president from Roxbury.
She got toast with avocado and lox at Deja Brew, where she discovered the young woman at the register had done the cover art for her musician nephew’s latest release. Then she swung by 6-Twelve Convenience and heard a bit of the the epic tale of the owner’s vendetta against 7-Eleven, before passing through American Provisions and picking up a pastry.

At American Provisions, which does have a patio for diners, co-owner Matt Thayer advocated for continuing the broad latitude for patios beyond the pandemic.
“This is my pitch, mayor,” he said with a grin and added that Janey was “killin’ it” so far.
Janey pledged further support, telling reporters, “Just talked to the folks right here that have a wonderful patio, who have enjoyed support by the city — I want to make sure that continues.”
She also noted the $400 million-plus federal coronavirus relief money that’s incoming, saying, “We will definitely use that money in a number of ways to support not just small businesses but residents.”
Earlier Thursday morning, she — and Gov. Charlie Baker and U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch — spoke at the Medal of Honor Day ceremony at Medal of Honor Park in Southie. One of the 69 living Medal of Honor recipients attended: Capt. Thomas Kelly, who served in the Navy in Vietnam.
“Boston has a long tradition of respecting our veterans and active service members, and it’s one of the things that I love about our city,” Janey said, noting that her grandfather fought in World War II.
South Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn, a Navy veteran himself, told the Herald later he’s glad the ceremony was Janey’s first stop as mayor, adding, “It shows the significance of her respect for our military veterans and military families.”
