Late run helps Bridgewater-Raynham girls finish perfect on Senior Night
BRIDGEWATER — It took until the final frame, but Bridgewater-Raynham came out on top on Senior Night.
With a 21-7 run in the fourth, Bridgewater-Raynham ended up with a convincing 49-37 victory over nonleague opponent Bishop Feehan at home Friday night.
“We got through Senior Night, so that’s always one of those momentous occasions,” said Trojans coach Cheryl Seavey. “It’s such a night with so many emotions for these young ladies. I’m always thinking about how they started and how they grew and matured. … It’s truly bittersweet.”
Bridgewater-Raynham (10-0) trailed 22-17 at the half and 30-28 after three, but took control on both ends of the floor in the fourth to end the regular season perfect.
Senior Kenzie Matulonis did it all in the second half after going scoreless over the first 16, as she finished with 10 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, five steals and five blocks in the win.
“Kenzie just has that mentality that when things get tight, ‘Jump on my back, I’m going to carry you guys home,’ ” Seavey said. “That’s true senior leadership and that’s true senior leadership from the point guard position.”
Matulonis contributed an assist or scored on 7-of-11 made baskets in the second half and it was her fire to compete that drove her with her team down in the second half.
“I wanted to win for my team,” said Matulonis. “I’m very competitive and I knew we could win that game. If we just came out in the first half, then it would’ve been our game all game. It just took the second half for us (to get going).”
The other two seniors, Bella Calvani and Tahlia Tah, combined for 12 points to help Bridgewater-Raynham win.
On the other side of the ball, the defense allowed just one field goal on eight attempts in the fourth to go along with six forced turnovers to help the Trojans score some easy buckets.
“Defensively, I think that’s where we won the game,” Seavey said. “If we don’t have the effort of Fiona Kelly (12 points) and Calvani battling their bigs in the post. If we don’t have Amber Silva denying as hard as she did or even the contributions of Tah just being that vocal leader on defense. Then you have the leadership of Kenzie that drives the whole ship.”
In the first half, Bishop Feehan (9-3) controlled the tempo and led by as many as eight twice in the second quarter. Junior Lydia Mordarski led the Shamrocks with 11 points.
Bridgewater-Raynham will be a top seed in the Southeastern Conference tournament next week.
