Widespread internet outages hit northeast U.S., including Massachusetts

Internet users From Boston to Washington, D.C., reported widespread outages Tuesday related to a Verizon network issue the exact cause of which remained under investigation by the tech giant.

“An internet issue impacting the quality of our Fios service throughout the Northeast has been resolved, and network performance and service levels are returning to normal,” Verizon Spokesman Chris Serico said in an email Tuesday afternoon. “We are working to identify the root cause.”

The outage affected internet and cloud providers as well as major sites such as Google and Facebook.

The East Coast outages began at 11:25 a.m., and recovery began at 12:37 p.m. according to Doug Madory, director of internet analysis at Kentik, a network monitoring company. He reported a 12% drop in traffic volume to Verizon.

The service interruptions were unrelated to a cut fiber in Brooklyn, N.Y., which caused problems for people in the area.

There are about 6.5 million Fios internet customers.
