Man killed in Natick fire

A man was killed early Tuesday when his Natick home caught fire, authorities said.

The single-family, two-story, wood-frame home on Longfellow Road was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at about 2 a.m., said Natick Fire Chief Michael Lentini.

“Every window already had been blown out by the heat of the fire,” said John Ebel, who lives a few doors down from the house. “Flames were shooting 20 feet into the air out of the windows, and there were sparks and burning ash flying in the air. Obviously, the first thing that goes through your mind is, ‘Did everyone get out all right?’ ”

A woman did manage to get out in time, Lentini said, but her husband did not.

“It’s sad,” he said. “I feel horrible for the family. We just wish them the best.”

The flames were so intense that firefighters were unable to enter the home at first, but when they did they found the man’s body at the back of the house on the first floor, where the three-alarm blaze is believed to have started, Lentini said.

About 25 firefighters from Natick and Framingham were able to control the fire in about an hour, Lentini said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation with help from the state Fire Marshal’s Office, he said.

The couple’s names were not released.
