Horror in Charlestown: Pedestrian killed after getting struck, dragged for a mile by vehicle
A vehicle struck a pedestrian in Charlestown Tuesday morning and dragged the person for a mile, killing the victim, according to police who said the driver left the scene.
Boston Police a few hours later located a “vehicle of interest” connected to the gruesome death — a crime scene that stretched from the Charlestown Navy Yard to City Square, with a horrifying blood trail and shoes on the street.
The vehicle initially hit the pedestrian near the Charlestown Navy Yard around 11:30 a.m. The vehicle then apparently dragged the victim for a mile to Charlestown’s City Square, police said.
Upon arrival, Boston Police officers found the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The vehicle fled the area, according to police who a few hours later said they had found a “vehicle of interest” in connection with the crash. Police did not say where the vehicle was located, or whether the driver has been found.
The crash sparked major traffic delays for several hours. Police shut down ramps to the highway, and closed down the North Washington Street Bridge. Around 4 p.m., City Square reopened to traffic.
During the first five days of the new year, there have already been multiple fatal pedestrian crashes in Massachusetts, including a hit-and-run in Springfield over the weekend, said Brendan Kearney of the WalkBoston advocacy group.
“The number of large vehicles involved with fatal crashes, especially involving people walking or biking, is a huge concern,” he said. “And that’s not just in Boston, but across the state and across the country.
“There are bad sight lines on these vehicles,” Kearney added. “And it’s putting everyone in a bad situation when we have large vehicles and streets where people can drive fast.”
During the coronavirus pandemic, there have been fewer cars on the roads but drivers are speeding at a higher clip, he said.
“That’s something we’ve seen across the state,” Kearney said.
Boston Police are still seeking the public’s help in the investigation.
