Mayim Bialik invites viewers to ‘Call Me Kat’ in new Fox sitcom

In her television-sitcom career, Mayim Bialik has been called Blossom, then Amy … and now, you can call her Kat.

After her long run on “The Big Bang Theory,” the actress resumes series work as an independent-minded Louisville, Ky., “cat cafe” operator — whose mother (played by Emmy winner Swoosie Kurtz) would like to see her settle down as she nears 40 — in the Fox comedy “Call Me Kat,” an Americanization of the British show “Miranda” that premieres Sunday, then moves to its regular Thursday slot on Jan. 7.

“We are showing a character who is not lonely,” Bialik said, “but she does spend a lot of her time in a way we don’t see a lot of women spend their time on television … or, really, in life. She’s alone sometimes with her thoughts and with her fantasies.”

However, Kat often shares those thoughts by addressing the camera directly. Bialik deems the character “a woman who includes everyone in her world, because that’s what makes her world interesting and colorful. And sometimes, those are people that exist and sometimes, they are people that don’t exist. But we really see that we are including the audience. Everyone is a part of it.”

Kyla Pratt and Emmy recipient Leslie Jordan play Kat’s work colleagues, with Cheyenne Jackson as someone from her past who bartends at a nearby site. Along with her former “Big Bang” co-star Jim Parsons, Bialik also is an executive producer of the new show … as is England’s titular “Miranda,” Miranda Hart.

As with the original Miranda character, Kat is “uncomfortable with the expectations that have been laid out for her, and I think that will resonate with a lot of people,” Bialik reflected. “What I love is that this is not a show about a woman trying to find someone. It’s a show about a woman trying to be happy finding herself, and seeing what happens along the way.

“I grew up really admiring quirky, multifaceted women,” added Bialik, “and comediennes who weren’t afraid to be silly and sloppy and do pratfalls. So, I’m really grateful that we are showing a woman who is owning all of herself.”

Bialik had another series between “The Big Bang Theory” and “Call Me Kat,” last summer’s virtually staged TBS competition “Celebrity Show-Off.” Though she earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience, she’s pleased to be in front of cameras again.

“Life is not always what you think it’s going to be,” Bialik said. “I still am a scientist, and I do a lot of other things in science — but making you believe something, making you feel something and entertaining you seems to be where the universe wants me.”
