William Galvin struck by ‘overwhelming’ determination of Massachusetts voters

The state’s chief elections official says he has been struck by the “overwhelming” determination of Massachusetts registered voters as as nearly half have already cast their ballots the day before Election Day.

“What I’ve been struck by — not just here in Massachusetts, but throughout the country — is the enthusiasm and determination of voters despite the COVID situation to vote,” Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin said on Sunday on WCVB’s “On the Record.” “The early voting numbers here and across the country have been overwhelming.”

Galvin has predicted record turnout in this year’s presidential election, eclipsing the 2016’s 3.3 million votes.

As of Saturday, 47% of the state’s 4.7 million registered voters had already cast their ballots, according to state election data. Through a combination of early in-person and mail-in voting, 2,282,879 ballots have been received by local election officials, data show.

It’s a trend in line with this year’s primary election, which saw the largest number of vote-by-mail ballots ever in an election that also drew historic turnout.

The figures mirror what’s happening on the national level, where more than 93 million people — 44% of registered voters nationwide — have already voted, according to the U.S. Elections Project.

Galvin called it a “telling testimony” to Americans’ commitment to vote, “despite all the problems, despite all the false rumors about the accuracy of vote-by-mail, despite all of the problems that have been experienced.”
