U.S. tense as vote count drags on

As Election Day drags on into election week, the mood around the country remains tense, with unrest and arrests in some cities.

Businesses in Boston and around the country over the weekend began girding for trouble, boarding up their storefronts.

And there have been some left-leaning protests, including in Seattle, Oregon, Washington, D.C., and New York City, where demonstrators scuffled with cops, resulting in more than two-dozen arrests, according to The New York Times. Dozens more have reportedly been arrested in Seattle and Portland, Ore.

There have been some pro-Trump protests, too, particularly outside of some ballot-counting locations in Arizona and Michigan.

Storefronts all over downtown Boston continued to hunker behind massive sheets of plywood. Two demonstrations did take place, with one on the Boston Common in the afternoon calling for every vote to be counted. Later, several hundred protesters marched from Nubian Square to Copley Square, though much of their message wasn’t particularly centered around the election, instead repeating calls for action over racial issues, similar to the many protests over the summer.

So far, there’s been no repeat of the May 31 demonstrations that devolved into rioting and looting here — and Boston Mayor Martin Walsh has said he’s confident that there will not be. Some further events are planned over the weekend.
