Trump supporters clash with counter protestors over election results
Trump supporters came out loud and proud on the Lexington Green Friday, where they condemned what they allege is a fraudulent presidential election and grappled with Biden backers.
“This election is being stolen from us. This election is being stolen from the duly elected president of the United States, Donald J. Trump. It is a corrupt system aligned against him,” said Tom Mountain, vice chairman of the Massachusetts Republican Party.
Former Vice President Joe Biden is on the verge of victory in the Electoral College, but Mountain accused the Democratic Party of rigging the election.
To date, no evidence of widespread voter fraud has surfaced.
Mountain and other Trump supporters at Friday’s rally would like to see the election settled by the Supreme Court.
“We’re far from done. We’re not going away,” Mountain told the Herald, surrounded by more than a hundred fellow Trump supporters.
They were met by about half as many counter-protesters, who carried signs reading, “Count every vote.”
“We respect the will of the voters. There’s been no evidence of fraud. Biden has won this election fair and square, and we’re here on this history-making day to stand on the right side of democracy,” said Biden supporter Dena Snyder.
Lexington Police set up metal fences to separate the two demonstrations, but as the afternoon wore on, their confrontation grew uglier. The majority of the president’s supporters went without face coverings, despite Gov. Charlie Baker’s new mask mandate. They approached the fence to shout down counter-protesters, and both sides exchanged heated and lewd language.
Local election worker Steigerwald Schnall said she was offended by allegations made by the president that workers at the polls may be tampering with votes. She said her Lexington polling location experienced nothing along the lines of fraudulent voting behavior.
“That just doesn’t happen,” she said.
