‘The Squad’ members returning to the House: AOC, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar declared winners

Members of “The Squad” are returning to the House of Representatives after winning re-election Tuesday night, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Ilhan Omar.

Pressley, the former Boston city councilor, trounced her opponent in the Massachusetts 7th Congressional District. She was up 87% to 13% over Independent candidate Roy Owens, with more than three-quarters of precincts reporting as of 11 p.m.

The Associated Press called the races for Pressley, AOC of New York, and Omar of Minnesota. Both AOC and Omar were also cruising in their districts.

Pressley told supporters Tuesday night in a virtual message that she’s “honored to have decisively earned your trust and your confidence for a second term.”

Pressley added, “And we are just getting started.”

The Associated Press as of 11 p.m. had not called the race for Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, the other Squad member.

The only open Massachusetts House seat is the 4th District, a contest between Democrat Jake Auchincloss and Republican Julie Hall to fill the seat of departing Congressman Joe Kennedy III — who lost his Senate bid to U.S. Sen. Ed Markey in September.

Auchincloss, a Newton city councilor, declared victory before 11 p.m., but Hall had not yet conceded. Auchincloss was up 65% to 35% as of 11 p.m.

The 32-year-old Democrat told reporters in Needham that the voters in the 4th District “have elected me to represent them in Congress.”

Auchincloss also tweeted, “I’m so grateful that the voters of MA-04 have chosen me as their next Congressman. I promise that I will be a representative for the entire district, that I will always listen, and that together, we will work to rebuild this nation.”

Outside the polls in Brookline Tuesday afternoon, Auchincloss said he was confident that he would keep the 4th District blue.

“We’ve put together, since the very beginning, a full district campaign representing everywhere from Fall River to Brookline and the towns in between,” he said. “I’m confident that broad base of support is going to carry me to victory.”

In September, Auchincloss narrowly won the crowded Democratic primary.

The AP also called the 5th District for Congresswoman Katherine Clark, who said in a statement, “Thank you to the voters of the Fifth District for sending me back to Congress! It is the honor of a lifetime to represent you and to work alongside you to build a stronger, more inclusive America.”
