Biden-Harris presidential transition plans continue, George W. Bush offers congratulations
President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris pressed on with their presidential transition plans, collecting the congratulations of former President George W. Bush while President Trump continued to fight the election results.
Biden on Sunday spoke with Bush, who congratulated him on the election win and “thanked him for the patriotic message he delivered last night.”
Bush also called Harris to congratulate her on her historic achievement.
“Though we have political differences, I know Joe Biden to be a good man, who has won his opportunity to lead and unify our country,” Bush said in a statement. “The President-elect reiterated that while he ran as a Democrat, he will govern for all Americans.”
“The challenges that face our country will demand the best of President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris — and the best of us all,” Bush later added. “We must come together for the sake of our families and neighbors, and for our nation and its future.”
Biden on Sunday attended Mass, and visited his son Beau’s grave.
The Biden-Harris Presidential Transition Twitter account started tweeting on Sunday — beginning to lay out how its team will confront the coronavirus pandemic, economic crisis, calls for racial justice and climate change at the start of the presidency.
“The work ahead in the next 73 days will be the foundation for an administration that puts the health, safety, and character of our communities first,” the account tweeted.
“We are preparing to lead on Day One, ensuring the Biden-Harris administration is able to take on the most urgent challenges we face: protecting and preserving our nation’s health, renewing our opportunity to succeed, advancing racial equity, and fighting the climate crisis,” they wrote. “The task ahead of the Biden-Harris administration is unlike any other in our history. In preparation, our transition will be led by experts, by science, and with character — ensuring that we will be ready to lead on Day One.”
The transition website lays out a seven-point plan to beat the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S., which leads the world in the number of virus deaths (237,000) and cases (9.9 million).
The plan includes: ensuring access to testing; fixing personal protective equipment problems; providing evidence-based guidance for how communities should navigate the pandemic; distributing resources for schools, small businesses and families; planning for the equitable distribution of treatments and vaccine; and protecting older Americans and others at high risk.
The plan also addresses the use of masks: “Implement mask mandates nationwide by working with governors and mayors and by asking the American people to do what they do best: step up in a time of crisis.”
