Trump will participate in remaining debates but opposes rule changes, campaign says

President Trump’s team says he will participate in the two remaining debates against Democratic nominee Joe Biden, but they’re pushing back against any potential rule changes.

“President Trump fully plans on participating in and winning both the second and third debates,” Trump campaign senior advisor Jason Miller said on a call with reporters Thursday.

But when it comes to the rules, “There should not be any changes to what’s been agreed to,” he said.

Trump tweeted earlier Thursday, “Why would I allow the Debate Commission to change the rules for the second and third Debates when I easily won last time?”

The Commission on Presidential Debates said Wednesday it will add “additional tools to maintain order” after the first debate Tuesday in Cleveland swiftly descended into crosstalk chaos. The commission met with representatives from both campaigns Wednesday morning to discuss potential changes, but has yet to offer specifics.

Biden’s campaign said Wednesday the former vice president plans to participate in the next two debates.

But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says he shouldn’t.

“One and done,” Pelosi, who previously said Biden should skip the debates altogether, said Thursday on Bloomberg TV.

Trump and Biden will debate again on Oct. 15 in Miami, which is expected to be a “town meeting” type format, and on Oct. 22 in Nashville. A vice presidential debate between Vice President Mike Pence and U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris is set for Oct. 7.
