Man accused of breaking into Charlie Baker’s home has lengthy criminal history: Police report

The man accused of breaking into Gov. Charlie Baker’s house while the governor’s wife and daughter were home is well-known to police and has a lengthy criminal history.

Lane Forman, 59, last week allegedly opened an unlocked exterior door at Baker’s Swampscott home and left a yellow manila envelope, according to his lawyer Stephen Reardon.

Reardon said the Danvers man was simply dropping off some “innocuous stuff in an envelope that he thought Charlie would have interest in.” Reardon, declined to say what documents and photos were in the envelope.

“It wasn’t violent in any way,” Reardon said, later adding, “I’m curious about what the misdemeanor is.”

Forman, who pleaded not guilty on the charge of breaking and entering to commit a misdemeanor and is being held on $5,000 bail, has been ordered to stay away from Baker and his family.

The police report on file at Lynn District Court states Forman has a lengthy criminal history — including 44 entries, of which 14 are violent offenses.

“Forman’s criminal history of threatening, stalking and harassing behavior that includes approx. 5 entries for similar offenses; and Forman’s history of court defaults,” state police wrote while requesting the court issue a warrant for the breaking-and-entering charge.

Baker at his Wednesday press conference said “everybody’s safe,” adding “that’s the only thing that really matters, and that’s all I’m going to say about it.”

When asked if Massachusetts should have a governor’s residence, Baker responded, “Everybody’s safe. That’s all I care about, and I’m not going to talk about it.”

A state police detail was outside Baker’s home at the time of the incident.

Forman allegedly pulled into the driveway of Baker’s residence on Monument Avenue, exited the vehicle and walked to the home’s side door, according to Sgt. Nathan Thomas. The sergeant then crossed the street and identified the person as Forman.

“Forman is known to this unit through previous contact over the years,” reads the police report. “Sgt. Thomas had (a) conversation with Forman, asking him what his business was at the residence. Forman responded, ‘Don’t (expletive) with me. Charlie told me to drop this off.’ ”

A judge has ordered Forman to undergo a competency evaluation, and the judge’s order included wearing a GPS — with the governor’s house and Monument Avenue as exclusion zones.

Forman’s next court date is Nov. 4.
