Hingham girls rebound from first soccer loss, down Notre Dame Academy 9-3

Days after suffering its first loss of the season, Hingham bounced back in monster fashion.

Sophie Reale scored four goals while Olivia Sharkansy added two goals and two assists as Hingham cruised past crosstown rival Notre Dame Academy, 9-3, on Friday afternoon at Hingham High School.

The Cougars’ goals came courtesy of a pair from Sydney Cuomo and a third from Olivia Mucci.

“Sometimes losses can really help a team and I’m happy for us it came when it did,” Hingham coach Sarah Dacey said. “A big message was just that we can’t have slow starts and we need to be a little tougher across the board. I thought that we came out great tonight in response to that.”

Coming off a 3-1 home loss against Plymouth North on Wednesday, it was evident from the opening moments of Friday’s match that the Harborwomen (5-1-1) put that setback quickly behind them.

Sharkansy got the Hingham attack started in the sixth minute, tapping home a ball from Claire Murray. Moments later it was Sharkansky’s turn to serve up a fellow teammate as her indirect kick from the 15-yard line landed an opportunity for Reale who cashed in her first goal of the night for a 2-0 lead.

The Harborwomen continued to pour it on throughout the first half as a goal from Maguire and then another courtesy of the Sharkansky-Reale tandem pushed Hingham’s lead to 4-0. The Cougars got on the board courtesy of a Mucci penalty kick, but Reale completed her hat trick in the 35th minute due to some terrific footwork. Kelsey Tarbey put the finishing touches on a dominant first half for Hingham scoring in stoppage time for a 6-1 lead at the break.

“We had a lot of missed opportunities versus Plymouth North, but credit to them, they played us incredibly tough,” Dacey said. “We did create some opportunities in that game though, so I just felt like if we could come out and finish our chances that we’re constantly creating then we’re going to score goals.”
