Number 4 Bobby Orr is giving President Trump a key assist, calling him the “kind of teammate I want” for four more years.
In endorsing Trump, the Bruins legend said the president has been forced to lead “under extremely difficult conditions over the past several years.” That includes more than just the coronavirus pandemic, the Hall of Famer said in an ad.
Orr joins other famous athletes, from former NFL quarterback Brett Favre to all-time great golfer Jack Nicklaus, who are backing Trump.
“No leader anywhere signed up with the idea that dealing with a worldwide pandemic would be a part of their mandate,” Orr writes in his ad that ran in Friday’s New Hampshire Union Leader. “The attacks on our president have been unrelenting since the day he took office.”
Orr, who said he paid for the ad in a paper that endorsed Joe Biden, added that despite all the vitriol, the president has “delivered” for the country.
“That’s the kind of teammate I want,” Orr says.
“Perhaps you do not like his tweets or how the President says things sometimes, and that is your right. But remember, this is not a personality contest; it’s about policies and the people those policies assist,” he adds.
Orr admitted he has “never done anything like this before, but I am greatly concerned for the country in which I have raised my family — a country I have grown to love deeply. I want my grandchildren to know the America I know, a place of patriotism and opportunity.”
A native of Canada, the 72-year-old Orr won two Stanley Cups with the Bruins. He finished his 12-year career with the Chicago Blackhawks. He’s still a hero in the Hub where a Herald photographer immortalized him as he flew through the air after scoring the winning goal 40 seconds into overtime, capping a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Blues in 1970.
Orr is now appealing to undecided voters to re-elect the president to “keep America moving forward.”
Nicklaus also points out in an endorsement over Twitter that you need to “look past” some of Trump’s tweets and “focus on what he’s tried to accomplish.” Trump and Nicklaus have been business buddies, but Orr’s endorsement appears to be a first.
Orr isn’t big on Twitter, but social media lit up into Friday night on the news of the endorsement. The insults were typical Twitter fare, but some who disagreed supported his First Amendment right to free speech.
“Too many pucks to the head,” one user tweeted.
“Everyone who likes hockey and hates Trump is mad online,” another chimed in.
Both urged everyone to vote Nov. 3. And, from Massachusetts to Texas, millions have already done just that.
As for Biden backers, Magic Johnson, Doc Rivers, Chris Paul and Lebron James, to name a few, are in his camp.
