Charlie Baker to participate in fundraiser for Kevin O’Connor
Gov. Charlie Baker is ramping up his support for fellow Republican Kevin O’Connor as the Dover attorney looks to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Edward Markey.
Baker will participate in a private fundraiser over Zoom on Thursday with O’Connor and Beth Lindstrom, a former Republican consultant who lost in the Republican Senate primary in 2018, according to O’Connor’s campaign.
The pols will discuss the economic impact of COVID-19, as stimulus talks remain stalled in Washington, and public safety.
The fundraiser comes a little more than a week after Baker endorsed O’Connor in a self-recorded video. Baker also voted for the political newcomer in his Sept. 1 Republican primary against Belmont entrepreneur Shiva Ayyadurai.
O’Connor could use the cash. Markey raised 11 times more money than his Republican opponent in the final weeks of the third quarter and had 12 times as much cash on hand, Federal Election Commission reports showed. The incumbent entered the final month of the race with $1.9 million in his war chest, compared to his challenger’s $162,209.
Baker’s support for O’Connor comes even though the two harbor different views of President Trump. O’Connor supports the president, though he’s worked to thread the needle between Trump and the more moderate Baker, who did not vote for Trump in 2016 and said he would not vote for the incumbent in 2020.
