White after Labor Day? That’s a chic yes

With the possible exception of white denim shorts and white linen sundresses out of season, white is always welcome. Particularly in its many shades of warm creams, chalk-hued leather and taupe-toned vanillas. So now that it’s after Labor Day, here are the best ways to break the outdated rule that we need to place a moratorium on one of the loveliest shades in our closet.

Wear it with camel or tan, especially as an accessory. White with brown tones provides a natural, casual effect that soothes the eye. And I especially love it when the look brings in contrasting textures: heavy linen with soft cashmere, bags studded with wooden beading and creamy white silk with brown tortoiseshell shades — a la Ray-Ban’s light brown gradient RB2188 ($180 on ray-ban.com).

Make it an all-white look. Is anything more luxurious — one that says, “I actually lead a life in which it’s possible not to spill on myself or get dog hair on this pristine outfit?” The only way to make it even more luxe is to add a white cashmere turtleneck sweater. A terrific one: Aqua Cashmere Puff Sleeve Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater ($188 on bloomingdales.com) in Mohave.
