NEW LOOK FOR CATHOLIC CENTRAL LEAGUE
St. Mary’s athletic director Jeff Newhall was having an increasingly tougher time filling out his school’s schedules.
The varsity wasn’t that much a problem, but the sub-varsity event was becoming a concern. With dwindling numbers at some of the schools in his league, Newhall was working extra hard to find games at the younger levels.
Once Bishop Feehan and Bishop Stang became available, the Catholic Central League extended an invitation and those two schools accepted. While the marriage is still in the honeymoon stages, all parties are thrilled so far.
“We’re happy to have added two schools that have a great athlete tradition and have teams competing at all levels,” Newhall said. “At St. Mary’s, we have programs at the varsity, junior varsity and freshman levels. Having schools like Bishop Feehan and Bishop Stang who have programs at all three levels makes it easier. The timing was perfect and our experiences working with their administration so far has been great.”
For the most part, the Catholic Central League will be broken down into three divisions. The North will have Arlington Catholic, Austin Prep, Bishop Fenwick, and St. Mary’s, the South will consist of Bishop Feehan, Bishop Stang, Archbishop Williams, and Cardinal Spellman, while the Small schools are Cathedral, Cristo Rey, Matignon, and Saint Joseph Prep.
Bishop Stang has already dipped its toes into the CCL varsity waters with early success. The golf team has opened the season with a pair of wins over Bishop Feehan and Archbishop Williams.
“The CCL is both a great challenge and a great opportunity for us,” said Bishop Stang athletic director Dennis Golden, who also serves as the school’s head football coach. “The competition from sport to sport is outstanding, that is evident. This will give us the opportunity to compete in a league with other co-ed, Catholic schools, who are similar in size to us, as well as similar in school mission.
“Our players, our coaches, and our school community all look forward to the opportunity to compete in this league. We look to represent Bishop Stang to the best of our abilities, and we want to do this with poise and with class at all times.”
The one drawback that some pointed to was the travel. A one-way trek from Arlington Catholic to Bishop Stang is 65.2 miles, not exactly a cross-town sojourn. Arlington Catholic athletic director Dan Shine admits it’s an obstacle, but feels the pluses far outweigh the minuses.
“All in all, this is a good thing for the league because we’re getting two outstanding schools, both academically and athletically,” Shine said. “We’ve been sensitive to (travel), figuring out what works best. For us, we’ll probably go down there on a Saturday or Sunday.
“We’ve already struck up excellent relationships with both schools in a relatively short period of time. I’m really excited about it.”
