Firefighters battled a stubborn multi-alarm fire in Chelsea that spread to a second house and required at least one person being transported away on a stretcher.
Crews from Chelsea and surrounding cities and towns fought the blaze for hours, largely containing it to one multi-family building, which sustained severe damage. The roof partially caved in, and at times flames blazed from the windows and top of the newly renovated building.
The blaze broke out after 4 p.m. in Chelsea’s waterfront Admirals Hill neighborhood, sending smoke curling above the harbor. Firefighters soon called for second and third alarms.

First responders tended to someone who appeared to be a resident and then took the person, an older man, away on a stretcher after performing CPR.
The fire spread to a neighboring property, causing what looked to be minor damage.
The state fire marshal’s office responded to the scene, but didn’t immediately answer a request for comment.
