Charlestown shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 with life-threatening injuries

One man was shot dead and another sustained life-threatening injuries following a shooting Thursday night in Charlestown.

Police Commissioner William Gross said officers responded to a call at 7:38 p.m. for shots fired and a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, police found two men in a car, one of whom was pronounced dead at the scene, on Decatur Street.

Police spokesman Sgt. Detective John Boyle told the Herald the second victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“This does not appear to be a random act of violence,” Gross said, adding he’s asking for help from Charlestown residents. “The only way to defeat this violence is to stick together.

“Many children in this neighborhood, parents, a lot of trauma in this neighborhood,” Gross said when adding a trauma response team would be helping cope with the violence.

Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins was also at the crime scene, along with other investigators from the Boston Police.

The homicide is the first in Charlestown this year, police said.
