Blue Jays’ Rowdy Tellez continues to torment Red Sox

A new year, and another season of Rowdy Tellez feasting on Red Sox pitching.

The Blue Jays’ first baseman and designated hitter is a must-start every time he faces the Red Sox and he continued to prove why in this weekend’s series at Fenway Park. He blasted two more home runs, including one on Sunday as part of a 3-for-6 day at the plate in Toronto’s 10-8 victory over the Red Sox.

Tellez’s numbers against the Red Sox are jarring, and they don’t make complete sense, given the 25-year-old is a career .249 hitter. In what is now 25 career games against the Red Sox, Tellez is batting .377 (29-for-77) with 11 homers and 23 RBIs. Against everyone else, he’s hitting .231 (108-for-468) with 22 homers.

Since the start of the 2018 season, only two players, Aaron Judge (12) has more homers against the Red Sox. Tellez is tied with his teammate, Teoscar Hernandez, at 11.

The Red Sox, certainly, will be glad to be done facing Tellez and the Blue Jays this season.

“I saw we raised his average up, I don’t know if he got to .300 but we sure bumped it up,” Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said. “Some guys feel great against different staffs no matter what you try to do. We’re not making good pitches to him but he is not missing any mistakes, he’s not chasing a lot out of the zone.

“So you have to give him a lot of credit for what he’s doing. Obviously feels really good against our pitching staff. So I think the confidence of that helps him get up there and not chase and wait for that mistake and then just not miss it.”
