Ticker: NH opens sports betting location; Lyft earnings plunge; Budget deficit hits record $2.81T

The first sports betting retail location is opening in New Hampshire, a little over a year after Gov. Chris Sununu signed a bill legalizing betting on professional and college sports in the state.

DraftKings Sportsbook at The Brook was opened Wednesday in Seabrook. Sports fans will now be able to place legal bets on all major professional and collegiate U.S. sports at the location. Seabrook was one of a number of towns where residents voted to allow the operation of sports betting retail locations.

The 90,000 square-foot facility that once was home to a greyhound racing track has betting kiosks and video walls. It features “The Stadium,” offering stadium seating on couches and movie theater-style chairs with three cinema-size screens and hundreds of TVs.

Nevada-based Eureka Casino Resorts, which developed The Brook, includes a plan for physical distancing and hand sanitizer stations, in addition to requiring guests and employees to wear a mask during the coronavirus pandemic.

Lyft earning plunge amid pandemic

Lyft on Wednesday posted a loss of $437.1 million for the second quarter, when the coronavirus outbreak meant few people were looking to use its ride-hailing service.

The San Francisco-based company’s revenue slumped to $339.3 million in the April-June quarter, down 61% from the same period last year.

Its number of active riders declined 60% during the quarter as people shied away from traveling in shared vehicles.

Budget deficit climbs to record $2.81T

The U.S. budget deficit climbed to $2.81 trillion in the first 10 months of the budget year, exceeding any on record, the Treasury Department said Wednesday.

The nation’s budgetary shortfall is expected to eventually reach levels for the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30 more than double the largest annual deficit on record.

The federal government rang up a $63 billion deficit in July, the department reported.

Last month’s deficit was sharply lower than June’s $864 billion, in part because the government collected a record amount tax revenue in July — $563 billion — after extending the filing
