Massachusetts reports 338 new coronavirus cases, 2 more deaths

Massachusetts reported 338 new coronavirus cases and two more deaths Wednesday as the positive test rate remained higher.

The new deaths bring the state’s total COVID-19 toll to 8,659, according to the Department of Public Health.

The three-day average of daily coronavirus deaths has dropped from 161 at the start of May to nine now.

There are now 111,371 confirmed cases of the highly contagious virus in Massachusetts. Another 102 probable cases were added Wednesday for a total of 8,272.

The statewide seven-day rolling positive test rate was 2.2%, up from 2.1% the day prior and up from a low of 1.7% on July 14.

There were 396 patients hospitalized as of Wednesday, with 57 in intensive care units and p0021 intubated. The three-day average number of hospitalizations was 375, down three from the day prior but up slightly from a low of 359 on July 27.

Long-term care centers reported a total of 5,515 deaths, with 376 facilities reporting at least one COVID-19 case and 24,434 residents and workers who have been sickened.

State and local testing pushes are continuing, with Boston running a pop-up testing site at Moakley Park on Old Colony Avenue in South Boston from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The global death toll from COVID-19 has topped 700,000, including some 157,000 Americans. There are now 18.6 million coronavirus cases worldwide, with 4.7 million coming from the United States. More than 11 million people have recovered, including 1.5 million in the U.S.
