Cooler temperatures in store through this weekend

After days of merciless heat and humidity, the rest of this week should bring a gradual reprieve from the dog days of summer, meteorologists say.

A cold front will bring cooler, drier air behind it, said National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Leatham.

“It really will feel comfortable into this weekend,” Leatham said. “We may even see some lower 60s at night when we get into the weekend.”

Thursday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 88 and a low around 71 at night, with a calm wind, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday also will be mainly sunny, but with a high near 83 and a low around 66 Friday night.

Temperatures will continue to dip into a sunny weekend, with highs near 77 on Saturday and 79 on Sunday, and lows both nights in the 60s.

But temperatures will begin to creep back up next week, when a high-pressure system shifts off shore, replaced by winds out of the south and southwest bringing warmer temperatures, Leatham said.

“That’s when we’re going to see things warm up again,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Danielle Knittle, “but we’re not going to be back up to the oppressive levels we’ve seen.”

Monday will bring a 40% chance of showers, with a high near 80 and a low around 68 Monday night, according to the National Weather Service South wind 6 to 8 mph.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be mostly sunny, with highs near 84 and 83, respectively.
