Woman dies after apparent shark attack in Maine

A woman died after an apparent shark attack near a Maine island on Monday, according to officials.

The Maine Marine Patrol is investigating the death of the woman near Bailey Island, the Maine Department of Marine Resources confirmed.

A witness reported that the woman was swimming offshore near White Sails Lane when she was injured in what appeared to be a shark attack.

Kayakers nearby brought her to shore and EMS responders were called to the scene, where she was pronounced dead.

Swimmers and boaters are urged to use caution near Bailey Island, and to avoid swimming near schooling fish or seals.

Since 2012, sharks have attacked people three times off of Wellfleet and Truro on Cape Cod. Two years ago, 26-year-old Arthur Medici was killed while boogie-boarding at Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet — the first shark attack fatality in 82 years in Massachusetts.
