Police to summons man who allegedly followed Groveland woman
The man who allegedly followed a Black Groveland woman in his car resulting in a tense encounter caught on video will now be criminally charged by police.
The 65-year-old Groveland man, who police did not identify, will be charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace, according to a press release.
The woman, identified in reports as Julia Santos, told police she was followed by the man after she responded to a resident’s ad on a community Facebook page offering free dog food.
Santos drove to the home, about a mile from hers, to pick up the dog food. As she turned to head back home she told police a vehicle turned around multiple times in an “obvious effort to follow her,” according to the press release.
In a video posted to social media, the man says, “I don’t feel safe with you driving around my neighborhood.” When Santos asks why, he responds, “Too many people.”
“Or is it because I’m Black? Is that why?” Santos asks, to which the man says no.
Groveland Police say the man disturbed neighbors during the incident and that another motorist had to drive off the road to avoid him while he was pulled up beside Santos’ vehicle. The man will appear in Haverhill District Court for a clerk magistrate’s hearing at a later date.
