Catholic Memorial’s Kurtis Henderson commits to play hoops at Hartford

One of Massachusetts’ premier stars has found a collegiate home.

On Thursday afternoon, Catholic Memorial guard and two-time Boston Herald Dream Teamer Kurtis Henderson announced his commitment to the University of Hartford.

A three-year varsity player, Henderson has been one of the top players in the Bay State over the past two seasons. Henderson has used his quickness, upper body and natural scoring ability to decimate teams across Massachusetts. While Henderson may stand at 5-foot-9, his strength allows him to overpower almost any defender that attempts to guard him. One of the top finishers around, Henderson has averaged more than 22 points per game over the last two seasons.

“(Kurtis) is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever coached,” Catholic Memorial coach Denis Tobin said. “Hartford is getting a real steal.”

Henderson reached the 1,000-point plateau back on Jan. 14, becoming the 13th Knight to reach the mark. He was named Catholic Conference MVP for the 2019-20 season.

Henderson’s stardom was clear to everyone in the Knights program from the moment he stepped on the court. As an eighth-grader, he starred on the junior varsity team.

“I am thrilled for him,” Tobin said. “He’s so far advanced, that you could tell as an eighth-grader on the JV team he was going to be a superstar. He’s one of the best scorers that I’ve seen in my tenure at CM.”

Henderson joins a litany of Knights’ stars over the years who have earned the right to play at the collegiate level. Former Boston Herald Dream Teamers Kellan Grady (Davidson), Guilien Smith (Dartmouth), Brandon Twitty (Stonehill) and Matt Hanna (Colby) are just a handful of notable Knights who came before Henderson.

A rising senior, Henderson is expected to make the Knights one of the top teams in Division 1 during the 2020-21 season
