Boston hospitals land top spots on U.S. News & World Report rankings

Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital are among the top 20 best hospitals in the country, earning spots on the 2020-2021 U.S. News & World Report “Honor Roll,” released Tuesday.

“I would attribute our success in historically being on the honor roll to our commitment to excellence,” said Dr. Elizabeth Mort, senior vice president of quality and safety at MGH. “We are working every day to take the very best care of patients.”

MGH ranked sixth on the U.S. News Best Hospitals list, dropping from the No. 2 spot last year. MGH also ranked within the top five for specialties including cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, ophthalmology, psychiatry and rehabilitation.

“When patients come through the doors of Mass General they just expect the best and that’s what we anticipate them to do,” Mort said.

The rankings compared more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties and 10 procedures and conditions. The methodologies are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates.

Brigham and Women’s earned the No. 12 spot on the rankings list, up one from last year, according to the report.

“I’m extremely proud of our continued presence on The Honor Roll of the best hospitals in the U.S.,” said Dr. Betsy Nabel, president of Brigham Health. “It is a tribute to the dedication, compassion and innovative spirit of our staff, who work tirelessly to achieve our vision of a healthier community and a healthier world.”

For specialties, BWH ranks fifth for rheumatology; sixth for both nephrology and cancer; seventh for cardiology and heart surgery; and eighth for gynecology on the report.

McLean Hospital in Belmont was named second best in psychiatry, falling just below Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

The designation made McLean America’s top-ranked freestanding psychiatric hospital for the 18th consecutive year.

“We are honored to be ranked among the top services for psychiatric care in the country and strive to meet the needs of more patients and families than ever before in our greater than 200-year history,” said Dr. Scott Rauch, president and psychiatrist in chief for McLean.

The data used in the 2020-21 Best Hospitals ratings come from a period predating the COVID-19 pandemic and were not affected by the pandemic’s impact on hospitals.

The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota took the top ranking this year, followed by the Cleveland Clinic in the second spot of best hospitals in the country.
