US Attorney Andrew Lelling calls out ‘increasingly absurd’ anti-police rhetoric to defund police

U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling clapped back at anti-police sentiment and what he called “increasingly absurd rhetoric” to defund police departments stirred by recent police killings during a Monday press conference.

“This is a good example of something that should be blindingly obvious that our local police actually do spend their time trying the to keep our communities safe,” Lelling said, announcing charges against six former eBay executives who orchestrated a targeted cyber harassment campaign against a Natick couple and praising the Natick Police Department for its role in uncovering an elaborate scheme.

“Once you push aside the overheated politics and increasingly absurd rhetoric this case is a reminder — one of hundreds you can find daily — that our local police departments are not optional — they are in fact crucial to maintaining a safe and free society,” Lelling said.

Calls to defund and demilitarize police departments have grown louder in recent weeks following the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and Rayshard Brooks at the hands of local law enforcement.

Boston and Cambridge have followed the lead of other cities in cutting a portion of local police budgets and instead investing those taxpayer dollars into social programs.
