Man shot in broad daylight in Dorchester suffering life-threatening injuries

A man suffered life-threatening injuries following a shooting at 82 Wheatland Ave. in Dorchester on Saturday afternoon, Boston police said, as the neighborhood was active with parties and gatherings.

Boston police said they got a call about 4 p.m. Saturday for a person shot and found the male victim had life-threatening injuries.

The neighborhood was filled with police and the crime scene response team and neighbors gathered outside to see what happened.

Many neighbors told the Herald there had been fireworks going off frequently in the neighborhood, but not shots.

Several backyard parties were in progress and kids were seen playing outside as police blocked off four blocks around the scene and canvassed the area for witnesses.

Gerald, a resident of the neighborhood for 20 years who did not want to provide his last name, said it had been quiet all day and added that he hadn’t seen such heavy police presence in the area for at least five years.

Crime statistics from BPD show there have been 15 fatal shootings in Boston so far this year, up 2 from last year.

There have been 71 non-fatal shootings, up from 53 this time last year.
