3 Boston pot shops broken into Monday morning
Investigators are looking into reports of high crimes involving break-ins at three Boston pot shops early Monday morning.
“The Cannabis Control Commission is currently aware of and investigating three overnight incidents that occurred at Pure Oasis, Patriot Care and Mayflower Medicinals in Boston Sunday, May 31, into Monday, June 1,” a CCC spokeswoman said Tuesday.
She added: “Licensees must notify the agency of a reportable incident within 24 hours and we will continue to monitor for additional reports from this period. The Commission remains deeply concerned for all licensees and the health and well-being of constituents who have been devastated by disproportionate harms to communities of color. We will collaborate with local authorities as necessary to ensure the safety of all Massachusetts residents during this time.”
The break-ins occurred on a night of widespread protests in downtown Boston following several high-profile deaths of black people across the country. A demonstration at the State House transitioned into rioting, fires and looting after dark in portions of downtown and the Back Bay.
But though this took place the same night, only Patriot Care close to Downtown Crossing was anywhere near the break out of unrest. Pure Oasis is in Dorchester’s Grove Hall neighborhood a couple of miles south, and Mayflower is in Brighton, well to the west.
The CCC said these incidents should be considered active investigations, so no further information was available. Places that grow or sell pot have to let the commission know within 10 days of any incident like this.
Pure Oasis is the only recreational cannabis shop open in Boston, opening up in early March. It was also the first “economic empowerment” applicant to open its doors, a designation due to the fact that it’s minority owned. The shop reopened a week ago after it was closed due to the coronavirus lockdowns.
Co-owner Kobie Evans said he suspects $100,000 worth of merchandise was stolen.
He said people showed up, smashed the windows and stole merchandise in an organized way.
“From there, it’s just a melee,” he said.
Mayflower and Patriot Care are both medicinal pot shops, not selling products for recreational use.
