Throwback Thursday

The victory garden is making a comeback as the coronavirus’ effect on the country’s food supply chain spiked consumer worries. Whether planting from seeds or food scraps, Americans made #victorygarden a lockdown trend on social media. George Ball, chairman of Burpee Seeds, told Reuters that they sold more seeds in March than any time in its 144-year history. While most people plant in their own backyards, the WWII victory gardens also stretched onto public lands. Boston Common and the Public Garden were drafted as growing sites to help supplement the U.S. food supply. In this Oct. 1, 1942 photo, part of the Common is ploughed up for planting.
