Sunday high school notebook: Seasons are over, but changes march on
Former Boston Herald girls basketball All-Scholastic Lindsay (Hallion) Miller has been named the new girls hoop coach at Rivers.
“I’m full of joy and gratitude to have the opportunity to lead this program,” Miller said. “Rivers offers the trifecta: a devoted community, the highest level of academics and preparation and a rich tradition of excellence. I look forward to working to build on the program’s success and offering unconditional support to my players both on and off the court.”
Miller played at Westwood, where she left as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,538 points. She helped guide the Wolverines to a pair of state titles as well as a 71-game winning streak.
Miller went on to play at Harvard, graduating in 2008. She spent five years as an assistant women’s coach at her college alma mater.
Baez best in baseball
Former Snowden baseball standout Josh Baez of Dexter Southfield was named the 2019-20 Gatorade Massachusetts Baseball Player of the Year.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound junior outfielder was named the Most Valuable Player at the WWBA Upperclass Southeast Labor Day Perfect Game Tournament in September. Baez hit two home runs in nine at-bats over three games at the event for Beast Mode Prime 2021 and reached base safely every time he came to the plate.
A transfer to Dexter Southfield for his junior year, Baez posted a .423 batting average with 25 runs scored and 18 RBI as a sophomore for Snowden International School, earning MVP honors at the Boston City League championship game as he led the Cougars to the title.
“Josh is a true five-tool player,” said Dexter Southfield baseball coach Danny Donato. “He hits for a high average and his power is off the charts.”
Needham’s Howard moves on
Matt Howard has stepped down as head baseball coach at Needham after five years at the helm. Under Howard’s leadership, the Rockets went 60-52 and won a pair of sectional titles and captured the Div. 1 state title in 2018.
A Weston High graduate, Howard went on to play at the University of Maine, where he batted .358 in his final season at the school. According to Needham athletic director Daniel Lee, Howard is moving to Maine with his family.

Levar Williams has decided to throw his name into the NCAA transfer portal after one season at NJIT. A former member of the Boston Herald Boys Basketball Dream Team from Burke in 2019, Williams appeared in 28 games this past season and averaged 3.6 points a contest.
