Nurses at Massachusetts General Hospital beg public to help in coronavirus fight

Intensive care unit nurses at Massachusetts General Hospital are begging the public to do their part and help flatten the curve in the ongoing coronavirus battle in an emotional video from the front lines.

The video, posted to Instagram on Monday, shows a group of 15 masked ICU nurses from Massachusetts General Hospital who all work on a dedicated coronavirus floor.

The video was taken and posted by Russell Gallen, who said he is the cousin of Sarahjane Hall, the main ICU nurse speaking in the video.

Gallen, who took the video via Skype, said he did it because he felt “overall worry for my cousin and her bringing the virus home to her husband and family.”

In addition, Gallen said his uncle, Joel Gallen, produced Sunday’s iHeart Living Room Concert for America benefit hosted by Elton John, and was seeking videos from the front line to feature in the show.

In the video, ICU nurse Sarahjane Hall says:

“Hi, my name is Sarahjane Hall and these are my colleagues. We are nurses on Blake 12, a designated COVID-19 intensive care unit at Mass. General Hospital. We are caring for the sickest population of corona patients and are preparing for the numbers to continue to grow.

“Working in an ICU, we are faced with life and death every day and are dedicated to saving as many lives as possible. But I would be lying if I said I wasn’t scared.

“Hospitals across the country are low on protective equipment. We are allotted one mask per day to conserve and prepare for the worst. One mask to protect ourselves from catching and spreading this deadly virus to our colleagues and loved ones.

“We are scared that the numbers of health care workers infected will continue to rise.

“We are scared and heartbroken for the families of our patients and wives, partners and children that cannot be with their loved ones as they fight for their lives. But our patients are not alone. We are all here.

“We are strong and united and will not give up in the fight to save lives. To all the health care workers across the country, we thank you, we are proud to be on your team.

“To everyone else, we still desperately need your help. The only way to stop the spread of this virus is to stay home. If you have access to surgical masks, N95 respirators or other protective equipment, please, please donate them to your local hospitals to help protect those of us on the front lines.

We all have a part to play in flattening the curve, we are begging you to do yours so we can do ours.”
