Foxboro takes out Old Rochester in Division 2 girls tournament

TAUNTON — It’s been Foxboro’s calling card during its most recent postseason success.

And the Warriors are using their relentless defense to fuel another deep run in the state tournament.

The defensive pressure from second-seeded Foxboro was too much for No. 3 Old Rochester Monday, as the Warriors forced 26 turnovers en route to a 46-29 win in the Division 2 South semifinals at the Rabouin Field House.

“It’s always been our relying factor for sure,” said Foxboro senior captain Abby Hassman as the Warriors (21-2) advance to their third sectional final in four years. “We’ve always had a strong defensive team and that’s really carried us through.”

Foxboro led wire-to-wire as it held ORR (20-4) to just three first-quarter points and after falling into a 13-3 hole, the Bulldogs never got within two possessions the rest of the way.

A key 9-1 run midway through the third quarter from the Warriors made that possible as Shakirah Ketant, who posted 13 points and 10 rebounds, netted five of the points in the spurt and Jordyn Collins scored off a steal to open a 32-17 advantage.

Katelyn Mollica put the finishing touches on the win by scoring eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter.

“It doesn’t matter how pretty or not pretty it is, it’s just a matter of getting to the next game,” said Foxboro coach Lisa Downs.

For Bob Hohne, the loss puts an end to a 42-year run at the helm of the Bulldogs, in which he amassed 652 wins, as administrators are forcing the longtime coach to step down.

“I really think it’s a lack of courtesy, disgrace that they’re throwing us out, my entire staff,” Hohne said. “I don’t know what more they want us to do.”…
