Fall River firefighter arrested on child sex charges

A Massachusetts firefighter was arrested Tuesday on multiple charges connected to the sexual exploitation of a child, authorities said.

Edward Mathias, a 10-year Fall River firefighter, was arrested in Warwick, R.I., on one count of indecent solicitation of a child and one count of electronically disseminating indecent material to a minor, Rhode Island State Police said.

Mathias, 40, of Fall River was taken into custody after he arranged via the internet to meet a police officer posing as a 14-year-old girl for sex, State Police said.

He was arraigned at the Third Division District Court, where Magistrate J. Patrick O’Neill released him on $2,500 bail on the conditions that he have no contact with children and have restricted use of the internet.

Mathias and the Fall River Fire Department did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment.

He faces up to a total of 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
